This year Gareth Emery released his debut album ‘'Northern Lights'’. And this year he climbed from #9 to #7 in the DJ Mag Top 100. DDance.nl had an interview with this trance artist from the UK.
Congratulations with your debut album 'Northern Lights'! Are you satisfied?
Yep, definitely. It wouldn’t have left my studio if wasn’t – I am a bit of a perfectionist in that way so if I wasn’t happy I would have held back until I was.
How would you describe your album?
I guess it’s a mix of progressive, house and trance, in the same sort of vein people can expect in my podcast and DJ sets.
Did it take a long time to produce the whole album?
Actually, it wasn’t too bad. From start to finish it took about seven months. I did work pretty intensely on it during that time though, and for most of 2010 I didn’t have much of a life except work and studio.
On one of the songs from the album you work together with Roxanne Emery. Is she related to you?
Yep, she’s my sister!
Which singer would you like to collaborate with in the future?
Probably nobody within the trance genre. That’s not because I don’t like these singers, because there are some amazing ones, but I’ve just heard them all a lot already. So I guess I’m more interested in working with people who’ve never done dance music before (as I did on this album) or people from totally different styles.
Last summer you performed at many festivals. What was your highlight?
Hard to say, there were so many. EDC in Los Angeles was pretty incredible, I think there were 200,000 people there over the weekend. And closing the main stage at Nature One in Germany was definitely one to remember – playing the final sets at festivals can be a bit of a gamble, you know, it can be raining and people go home etc, but the arena was packed and it was totally amazing.
Are there spots in the world where you would like to perform in the future?
You know, I’ve played most of them already. I’d love to do Japan at some point as I’m a huge fan of the food and I’ve never been there before. But most of the places I always wanted to play I’ve made it to over the past few years.
What are your plans for the next year?
To hopefully have a slightly more chilled year than this one, because with writing the album and touring, it was just crazy and incredibly hard work. Of course, there will be a lot of touring, a new mix CD, and I’ll also be starting to think about my next artist album, but I doubt that will be released until at least 2012.
What are you doing over 5 years from now?
Hard to say. Definitely still working in music though, although perhaps touring a bit less heavily. This year I’ll do about 130 shows and I don’t know how many years I could travel this intensely for.
Are you always looking forward to your ranking in the DJ Mag Top 100?
I would never say I particularly look forward to the list, and think it’s important to remember that it’s a popularity vote rather than one based on ability. And every year there are people who I really think should be in the poll who are not – this year Jerome Isma-Ae and Ashley Wallbridge for instance. But it’s always nice to be in the poll, and especially nice to be so high. I was very happy with 7 in 2010.
Do you have plans for a vacation in the coming period?
I’ve got some time off in January so really hope to sort out a vacation for then. It’s been two years since the last one…!
