DDance interview with Tara McDonaldDDance interview with Tara McDonald

The Voice of Dance can’t be stopped! Voted as Best Female Voice in the dance scene… Released a couple of dance tracks this year… New projects for the next period… Tara McDonald is a very talented singer whose songs are well known for a lot of people. At least you know one of more songs of her. ‘My My My’, ‘Feel The Vibe’, ‘Delirious’, ‘Tomorrow’, ‘Shake It’, ‘Set Me On Fire’ are just a view tracks she appears on. On her new record ‘Pandemonium’ she worked together with David Guetta and Afrojack. Sander of DDance.nl is having a conversation with Tara.

You just have finished a new track called 'Pandemonium' together with David Guetta and Afrojack. Where is this song about?
The song really picks up the crazy vibe in a club when you completely and utterly lose yourself in the music and the beats.  People are going insane of the dance floor and its basically "pandemonium"!  It's amazing to have a new record with both David and Nick AKA Afrojack as I've wanted to work with him for a while now.

How was it to work with David again?
It’s always amazing to work with David either live or when recording he really has this magic touch, like Midas where everything he touches literally turns to gold.  I'm really happy for his success, its well deserved and "Pandemonium" is actually David Guetta first release since being crowned the world's number 1 DJ...so it’s even more exciting:)  It’s on the FMIF 2011 Ibiza mix compilation and is available on itunes and beatport...plug plug ;)

Did you record the song in the studio of David or Afrojack?
Actually it was with neither, as you can imagine everyone is crazy busy and so I recorded the vocals for this track in London with a good friend of mine called Wez Clark and we just sent the vocals parts over to David and I think he did the rest.

When did you realize that you want to be a singer?
I really think it was chosen for me to be honest.  I can remember when I was a little kid even when I sang happy birthday with a group of other children adults would tell my Dad your daughter can really sing.  I definitely always had a big passion for music and wanted to be on the stage for as long as I can remember.  I started working in the industry when I was 9 years old after being "spotted" singing in my local church.  What's crazy is after all these years in the business I still have the butterflies in my stomach before I go on stage, you'd think I'd be used to it by now!

‘Feel  The Vibe’ and 'My My My' were your first major hits in 2006. How did you get in contact with Axwell and Armand Van Helden?
I co wrote the lyrics and sang "Feel The Vibe (‘Till The Morning Comes)" which ended up doing quite well in the UK.  It was through this track that I got to work with Armand Van Helden as the record label and Armand had heard my vocals and approached me to sing "My My My", of course I jumped at the chance. When I recorded the track it was in London and Armand is based in New York City so we never actually met until a couple of years ago when we were both at the same gig performing.  I have to say that’s one seriously cool dude!  It was funny as he had a shock when we met, as he thought I was black because of the way I sing, he didn't believe it was really me until I sang in his ear.

You've collaborated with various Dutch producers and dj's like Sidney Samson, Mischa Daniels, Funkerman and now Afrojack. What is it like to work with Dutch producers?
I really like Dutch people to be honest.  I started to coming to The Netherlands years ago when I was just 12 years old as I did a few performances here when I was a child ambassador for UNICEF after winning a singing competition called the "Danny Kaye award" and singing for your Queen (she was very nice).  I have always felt at ease in the country, as Dutch people tend to be so laid back.  Maybe there's something in the water over here but the Dutch dance music scene is really like nowhere else on Earth, its completely crazy and your dance stars are known now internationally more so than the Dutch pop stars.  People all over the world are going crazy for the Dutch beats!  What I like though is that there is many types of dance music and the people that I have collaborated with all have their own sound.  I like to work with different styles within the dance music genre, for example the track "Dynamite" with Sidney Samson is very different to "Everything" with Funkerman or "Beats for You" with Mischa Daniels. They all have their own vibe and although everyone I have worked with over here has been so different musically. They all have one thing in common....great people.  I can only work with people I like, as I feed off the good vibes!

Where are you the most proud of what you've reached in your music career?
I'm really proud to earn my life through my music.  It’s really not the easiest career option and a lot of people I started out with are not in the industry now as they couldn't stand the ups and downs.  When I wasn't as successful I did some crazy jobs like mud wrestling, waitressing, bar work, TV extra....anything that I could do that would work around my music.  Sometimes I think I did everything the hard way as I worked as a backing singer, backing dancer and wrote songs for other people before singing on records myself.

I was really happy to be voted the best female voice of the dance scene by Only for DJ's magazine, it meant a lot to me because the public made the vote and I was very happy that they picked me of course!  Writing "Delirious" was special because I didn't know it was a David Guetta track and to be honest he wasn't so well known in the UK at that time.  I just decided to work on that track because I really loved the instrumental and I'm really happy that it turned out so well and got a lot of recognition commercially.

But I really feel the best is yet to come.  I've been working really hard on new music and I didn't even go to Ibiza this year as I was in the studio all summer...so I have high hopes for the future.  I'm crossing my fingers and toes and eyes...actually not eyes, that's never been a good look!

Actually I'm planning my first solo release for early 2012....I'll be sure to keep you posted about that.

Where can we see you performing in the next period?
I will be all over the place touring till the end of the year, Europe, Middle East, Asia and South America. So it’s best to check out my website for all my news and new dates.  Just go to www.taramcdonald.tv and hopefully I'll be somewhere near very soon.  I'd love for your readers to come and say hi!

What do you want to have reached over 5 years?
I want to have made my own artist album and be touring the world in massive concerts/arenas.  To still be making music that inspires me and to not hold back.  I don't want to have any regrets.   I also want to continue to work on charity projects and try and make a difference.  I'm lucky as I get to tour the world, there's not many places that I haven't been and that’s a real education in itself.  I have gotten to see some of the most beautiful places and also some of the places that need some more love and care.  I want to put a lot of love back as I know I'm really very lucky to have been born with this voice and now I have to make the most of it and just do the best I can.

What do you do besides making music?
Not much to be honest.  It’s pretty much taken over my whole life, even my family now have jobs with me.  My mother is my PA and my Dad is my driver in the UK, which is great as it means I can see them more often and also have people around me that really love me and that I can completely trust as sometimes the business can be fickle and its very important to have good people around you.  When I'm not on tour I'll be in the studio or thinking of new ideas or shopping for new costumes..the shopping actually takes up more time than you'd expect, I used to love the excuse that I shop for work but now ( and believe me I never thought I'd say this) it’s become a bit of a chore...

The other thing I do when not making music is twitter...I have to say I'm a bit of a twitter addict and I'd love your readers to follow me!! twitter.com/TaraMcDonaldTV

Any plans for a vacation in the near future?
Yes please!! I want a holiday so much but in all honesty I want to work more!  All my family and friends shout at me as I never go on holiday and if I do it to Ibiza where I just hit the clubs and check out the new music of course.  Every time I block out a week or two in my diary I get offered another gig or something big comes in and I want to work in the studio and it’s so hard for me to turn it down as music is my passion so it hurts me to say no....hhmmmm maybe my holiday will never happen :D

Thank you very much for your time and all the luck with your new releases and all other projects!
